Deep Venous thrombosis
and Pulmonary Embolism

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot develops in a deep vein, usually in the leg area. It can arise if you sit or lay down for long periods of time when you are recovering from a surgical procedure or ona long airplane flight. It can also be related to medications such as oral contraceptive pills or may be hereditary.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) arises if a blood clot break off and makes its way through your bloodstream into the lungs. The blood clot may obstruct a blood vessel in your lungs and cause significant damage.

Here at PULSE, Dr. Majeed specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of both DVT and PE.

DVT and PE Treatments

If you have DVT or PE, our goal will be to shrink the blood clot and prevent any further blood clots. Some of the treatments we may recommend include:

Blood thinners

Blood thinners can be taken in pill form or injected and are formulated to decrease the blood’s ability to clot. While blood thinners do not break up blood clots that already exist, they can prevent blood clots from increasing and reduce the risk of future clots developing.

Clot busters

Clot busters are prescribed in serious cases of DVT or PE and are intended to break up blood clots through an IV or catheter that is placed into the clot directly.

Filters

Filters are reserved for patients who cannot take blood thinning medications. They are inserted into a large vein in the abdomen known as the inferior vena cava and prevent blood clots that break loose from damaging the lungs.

Interventional Therapies

Blood clots can be removed by mechanical suction devices. Angioplasty and stenting can also be performed in areas of obstruction. A balloon is used to open a narrowed or blocked vein. A stent may also be inserted to keep the vein open. In addition, a catheter may be used to direct medication that dissolves blood clots directly.

Compression stockings

Compression stockings are worn on the legs and can prevent swelling.
