Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology is a branch of cardiology that deals with catheter-based invasive treatment to repair damaged or weakened blood vessels, narrowed arteries, or other parts of the heart.

Here at PULSE, we are pleased to offer interventional cardiology to patients. Some of the most common conditions that can be treated by an interventional cardiologist include:

Coronary artery disease

Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease. It occurs when the arteries that are responsible for supplying blood to the heart muscle harden and narrow.

Peripheral vascular disease

Peripheral vascular disease occurs when blood vessels outside of the heart narrow, block, or spasm. This condition can occurs in the veins or arteries. Narrowed blood vessels can occur in multiple sites such as in the neck, arms, abdomen, kidneys, and legs.

Valvular heart disease

Heart valve disease occurs when the valves which control blood flow into the heart’s chambers are unable to work properly.

Dr.Majeed is an interventional cardiologist who has successfully performed a volume of over 20,000 procedures in the last 20 years. PULSE is proud to offer cutting-edge therapy with the latest and most advanced techniques.

How Interventional Cardiology Works

An interventional cardiologist inserts a catheter into the femoral artery (groin site) or radial artery (wrist site). Once the catheter is in place, wires, balloons, and stents as well as numerous other devices can be advanced through the patient’s body to the area of concern under real-time imaging (fluoroscopy and cineangiography) to treat the problem. This procedure is typically performed under a local anesthetic with conscious sedation.

The procedure is performed percutaneously and no surgical incisions or cuts are made. Compared to traditional open surgery, it is less invasive with a shorter recovery time.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

Fortunately, interventional cardiology has significantly evolved over the past few years. Simple and complex procedures involving the coronary arteries, peripheral vasculature, and heart valves are being performed minimally invasively resulting in less pain, shorter hospital stays, and improved recovery time.

Here at PULSE, we are pleased to perform minimally invasive treatments such as transradial  and transfemoral cardiac catheterization, peripheral/endovascular intervention, endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, and transcatheter valve therapies. The procedure is performed percutaneously and no surgical incisions or cuts are made. Compared to traditional open surgery, it is less invasive with a shorter recovery time.

Dr. Majeed is always advancing the interventional cardiology program and making it faster and easier for patients to recover.
