Deep Venous Thrombosis
and Pulmonary Embolism

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, most commonly in the legs. DVT can develop during periods of prolonged immobility—such as after surgery or during long flights—or may be related to medications (such as oral contraceptives) or inherited clotting disorders.

At PULSE, Dr. Farhan Majeed specializes in the prompt diagnosis and advanced treatment of both DVT and PE, using minimally invasive techniques whenever possible.

DVT and PE Treatments

Treatment Options for DVT and PEOur goal is to dissolve or remove existing blood clots and prevent new ones from forming, reducing the risk of complications such as chronic venous insufficiency or recurrent pulmonary embolism. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s specific risk profile and clinical status.

Blood Thinners

Blood Thinners (Anticoagulants)- these medications are available in oral or injectable form, reduce the blood’s ability to clot. While they do not dissolve existing clots, they help prevent clots from growing and reduce the risk of new ones forming.

Clot Busters

Clot-Busting Medications (Thrombolytics)- in more severe cases of DVT or PE, thrombolytics may be administered intravenously or delivered directly into the clot via catheter. These medications rapidly dissolve dangerous clots but carry a higher bleeding risk, so they are reserved for critical situations.

Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filters

For patients who cannot take anticoagulants, a filter may be placed in the inferior vena cava (a large abdominal vein). This device prevents clots from traveling to the lungs and causing a pulmonary embolism.

Interventional and Catheter-Based Therapies

Dr. Majeed performs minimally invasive procedures to directly address the source of the clot such as:
- Mechanical thrombectomy to physically remove the clot using suction or mechanical devices•
- Catheter-directed thrombolysis to deliver clot-dissolving medication directly into the clot•
- Angioplasty and stenting to reopen blocked veins and maintain vessel patency.

Compression Stockings

Specially fitted stockings help prevent swelling and reduce the risk of post-thrombotic syndrome by improving blood flow in the legs.
