Interventional Cardiology

Interventional Cardiology is a branch of cardiology focused on catheter-based, minimally invasive procedures to repair damaged or weakened blood vessels, treat narrowed arteries, and address structural heart issues.

Here at PULSE, we are pleased to offer interventional cardiology to patients. Some of the most common conditions that can be treated by an interventional cardiologist include:

Coronary Artery Disease

The most common type of heart disease. It occurs when the arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle become hardened and narrowed.

Peripheral Vascular Disease

A condition in which blood vessels outside the heart—typically in the neck, arms, abdomen, kidneys, or legs—become narrowed, blocked, or spasmed. This can affect both veins and arteries.

Valvular Heart Disease

Occurs when one or more of the heart valves fail to function properly, impairing blood flow through the heart's chambers.

Dr. Farhan Majeed is a skilled interventional cardiologist who has performed over 20,000 procedures in the past 20 years. PULSE is proud to offer advanced therapy using the latest interventional techniques and technology.

How Interventional Cardiology Works

An interventional cardiologist inserts a catheter through the femoral artery (groin) or radial artery (wrist). Once the catheter is in place, specialized tools such as wires, balloons, and stents are guided through the patient's vascular system to the treatment site using real-time imaging (fluoroscopy and cineangiography). This percutaneous procedure is performed under local anesthesia with conscious sedation. Unlike traditional open-heart surgery, it requires no large incisions, resulting in faster recovery and less physical trauma.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

Interventional cardiology has advanced significantly in recent years. Today both simple and complex procedures involving the coronary arteries, peripheral vessels, and heart valves can be performed using minimally invasive techniques, resulting in reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times.

At PULSE, we offer procedures such as transradial and transfemoral cardiac catheterization, peripheral and endovascular intervention, endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, and transcatheter valve therapies. These treatments are performed percutaneously requiring no surgical incisions, and offers a safer alternative to traditional surgery.

Dr. Majeed continues to advance the interventional cardiology program, making procedures faster, safer, and easier for patients to recover from.

Cardiovascular Interventions

Dr. Farhan Majeed specializes in the following cardiovascular interventions:

Left heart catheterization via transradial or transfemoral approach

Selective coronary angiography

Percutaneous coronary intervention with intracoronary balloon angioplasty and stent placement

Complex percutaneous coronary intervention (left main disease, bifurcation lesions, vein graft lesions, calcified lesions, chronic total occlusions)

Coronary mechanical aspiration thrombectomy

Coronary atherectomy (cutting balloon, rotational, laser, orbital)

Advanced coronary imaging (iFR, FFR, IVUS, OCT)

Intravascular coronary brachytherapy

Hemodynamic support device placement (IABP, Impella, and ECMO)

Transvenous pacemaker placement

Endomyocardial biopsy

Pericardiocentesis
